"GESTALT": Shape, Form, Forma... What else?

Dear pupils:

Is this some kind of difficult stuff?: not that much!... If you consider that you have been "working" with it your whole life so far, you will perhaps realise that it cannot be that complex. Actually, "gestalt" is the stuff that your entire visual world is made of. 
As David Hogue told us in this video a few hours ago: "Gestalt Principles and Laws describe how we perceive the world around us as meaningful and complete objects, with a clear distinction between foreground (figures) and background. We perceive whole objects, not a series of independent parts". Quite a summary!... 
We must admit, though, that we have neither time, nor much capacity (not yet) to either grasp -which, by the way, is a synonym for "perceive" or "understand"- or develop the vast amount of information and knowledge that this issue implies.
Anyway, I propose to you to watch some more videos, dealing all of them with this very topic: the way that we perceive and organise our visual "inputs" (things that we see, if you rather want to put it simple); the kind of laws that rule this obvious, immediate, deceptively simple, but utterly complex process: the human visual perception.

THE CAMERA OBSCURA

May I introduce you to my own hand-made camera osbscura?... You will discover how simple it is: nothing but a wooden box with a lid on the top of it, a very cheap biconvex lens and, opposite this, a movable frosted glass; and the glass must be movable in order to set three different focuses (from a few meters to the infinite). The interior of the box is painted in black.

As you can see in these photographs, you can manually change the diaphragm, so the light coming into the box increases or diminishes, depending on the diameter of the "pupil". 

That actually changes the sharpness (rather the "Depth of Field") of the images: the smaller the hole is, the sharper the image becomes.
    There is a nut (see meaning #2) under the camera in order to screw it on top of a tripod.

The images on the frosted glass are inverted (upside down), and the same phenomenon happens inside your eyes, on both retinae. Amazing!, isn´t it?...

GESTALT / Laws of Grouping

Maybe you can remember these really simple designs. I showed them to you once in class, and we talked about its meaning. They try to explain, in a very schematic way, the ideas behind visual perception, according to Gestaltism, which was originally a German school of psychology.  
    At the begining of the twentieth century, those Gestalt * specialists thought (many people still think they were right) that we are all born with basic but complex ways of visually-grasping the environment around us. They argued, very significantly, that the whole is much more than the sum of its parts (What do you think this sentence means?).

There is a Gestalt concept called prägnanz (beware!: nothing to do with "pregnancy"). It might be described as "pithiness" (en español, más o menos, CONCISIÓN, aunque se aplica el germanismo "PREGNANCIA"). From this concept the so-called Law of Prägnanz is derived, which says that we tend to order our experience in a manner that is regular, orderly, symmetrical and simple.

As you can see, I am arranging a few more links with theoretical material. This doesn´t mean that you will have to study all of it: it is just to help you, in case it is necesary to improve or widen both your knowledge and data. It is convenient, anyway, to have it at hand. We might resort to these documents, someday.
